Isolation
- Culion, which makes up 36 islands has a population of 19,500. It has little experience in natural disasters and has been isolated for more than a century due to its community’s history. This leaves the people inside and outside the island with little knowledge and experience when it comes to relief efforts. Local government units for example aren’t used to sending out help in Culion; the distance adds on to this difficulty.
- Due to Culion’s distance from the main island of Palawan, they are the last to receive or might not be able to receive anything especially with the chaos and scarcity of resources in severely affected areas that are requiring more attention.
- On a normal day, commuting to Culion is only once a day. There are no other ways to reach the island unless you rent a private boat.
- Power supply is 12 hours a day or less, sometimes.
- There are no banks. If residents need to make bank transactions, they go to Coron, the nearest island, a two to three hour boat ride away. Culion is paying a messenger, Php 100 per transaction, just to make bank transactions at Coron.
